PBs and mindset

Today’s crossfit challenge centred around achieving a 2 rep max Thurster (video below if that’s not making sense !!).

I went along thinking my previous best was 47.5kg .. and af 2 attempts managed a (slightly wobbly) 48kg.

Turns out my previous best was 45kg.

Probably wouldn’t have tried so hard had I known that….

Thruster … from the clean position, drop into front squat then take bar straight overhead.

This is my 48kg PB from today.

Not bad for a 56year old 55kg person 😉

Techno-fail

This wordpress stuff is all new to me: my intention was to write Saturday’s blog ‘on the go’ : but I couldn’t log in in my fancy phone.

I guess it’s all a learning curve – and one day soon I hope to blog from a beachside location: sun beating down with gentle breeze keeping my cool. But for now, bear with my whilst I get up to speed.

It’s a work in progress: much like my life!

Major wobbles and Full Moons

Is it just me or does the moon affect how you feel today?

It’s 10th January – and the first Full Moon of the new decade. When the moon is full it’s said emotions are heightened. We react quicker – and sometimes bypassing the ‘pause’ button (or maybe that’s just me).

I’ve broken up relationships, gone in for an argument and made crazy decisions: only to look at teh sky and realise I should’ve held back.

So maybe tonight, rather than head out into public spaces, I should put on the kettle and stay home.

Does the full moon affect you this way?

Is it just me?

Sound and yoga

Have you been in a yoga class where the teacher has used a singing bowl and/or gong during relaxation?

Did you notice how the tones work their way deep into you very being and seem the create their own vibrations inside of you?

Singing bowls have different tones depending on their size. The larger ones (like the one I use in class), with deeper tones, resonate withe the lower chakras – and the smaller, higher pitched ones with the higher chakras.

Today I bought this gong and plan to incorporate it in my classes – watch this space!

Listen to the rhythm of your body

Listen to the rhythm of your body

Sleep when it tells you

Rise when it tells you

Eat when it tells you

Move when it tells you

Listen to the rhythm of your body

Listen to the rhythm of your body

Spring is for waking

Summer is for growing

Autumn is for blooming and preparing for change

Winter is for rest, so rest

Listen to the rhythm of your body

Listen to the rhythm of your body

Don’t fight it

Be kind to yourself

Just listen and do it

Your body know

Listen to the rhythm of your body

Keep on dancing

Last night I went to a ceroc class. the format in these classes is that you learn a move bit by bit and in the process you swap partners every minute or so.

Normally at these classes I try the men’s role – to learn a bit of leading ( and so get to talk to a lot of ladies, some on whom would clearly much rather be spending that minute partnered with a man, but never mind..)

Last night there was an excess of men so I went on the followers’ side. So many men, so many questions, so many smiles. God loves a trier, to quote a very good friend of mine!

Ceroc is a lovely, safe environment to meet people (bearing in mind that the average age is ‘not young’) and I’d totally recommend it for the reasons of sociability, learning new skills and fun. Sure beats sitting home watching TV.

Keep on dancing.

PBs to start the Year

Crossfit is a competitive place – where the best person to compete against is yourself.

Today we did a Crossfit Baseline test and then Fran. And in both cases I scored better than my former self of November 2018.

Crossfit Baseline was

500m row, 40 air squats, 30 ab mat situps, 20 pushups and 10 pullups. : All done in 5 min 19 secs – and 1 min 2 secs faster than last time.

Fran is

21 – 15 – 9 Thrusters (30kg) and PullUps. Last time 11:40, this time 9:18.

I may not break any records – but I’m good with those. Onwards any upwards!

Dance, dance, dance

Modern Jive or Ceroc is an easy to learn style of social dancing. Dance has been shown to be one of the best forms of exercise for those wishing to maintain their health and wellbeing.

It’s always inspiring to attend social events and see the same family of faces, all age groups, all sizes and shapes – enjoying a night of social dance. It’s relatively easy to join in and become one of the gang and I’d totally recommend it for anyone feeling in need of social connection, fun and and new challenge.

Dance. Just do it.

Passion and starting from zero

I guess you have to accept that if you want to learn something new you have to accept that you’re going to be rubbish at it to start with. – And equally that anything worth achieving is going to require some effort.

Looking back at my achievements in 2019 (for example, being in the top 4 in the UK Crossfit Open for my age group twice in the year – and achieving numerous lifetime bests in the course of my regular training) then it’s obvious that success comes from regular effort, practice and passion.

Every year for the last several years I’ve made a vague resolve to learn to play my saxophone – and given up at the first hurdle. This year I’m opting to make regular time to practise with my clarinet (and move onto the saxophone later in the year). A little every day will get me off the starting blocks.

Today I’m struggling with the embrasure – but like every muscle I will get stronger. Wish me musical luck!!
