Polluted air

I don’t get it – the whole smoking cigarettes is a step beyond – but vaping? Why?

So many folk wandering around clasping tightly onto their puffers desperately inhaling occasionally. I just don’t get it – why go to all that bother to inhale polluted air?

The body doesn’t need it, the body probably doesn’t like it and most definitley the benefits can;t be high in number.

Am I missing something here?

Peace and joy

Today I started a new yoga class in the most delightful space..a church hall in the centre of town.

It’s interesting that some churches don’t allow yoga to be taught in their space: this is something I find most curious.

Yoga is a connection between the body and the breath – from there we connect to our space, the greater consciousness and our fellow beings. We offer positivity and love, peace and joy.

I love spending time in beautiful spaces and this fabulous church hall is one of those. Here’s to many more yoga classes in this lovely location.

Peace and joy.

Healthy eating VS Nutrigenomics

Perhaps this is too heavy for a Friday evening – but just wanted to put it simply – in a way that I understand it to be.

Healthy eating is great – a healthy well-balanced diet swill get you far. There are many advisers and plenty companies offering supplements to assist you make beneficial changes to your diet.

positively enhance your healthspan

Nutrigenomics is not just health eating – nutrigenomics is the science examining the relationship of what we eat and how that influences our genes and gene expression. The study of how what we consume can make positive changes to the function of our body on a cellular level. Nutrigenomics is key to those wishing to improve their healthspan as well as their lifespan. This field is one which is growing and one which will become more mainstream in coming years – in the meantime you can stay ahead as there are companies offering products which are proven to enable those benefits. 7 tips for stress management

Stress comes form all angles – work, family, relationships, environmental, dietary, lifestyle, bacterial, viral, sunlight – you name it, it causes a reaction in your body. The body is designed to cope with much of this stress – and does so very well: up to a point. The tipping point – where the stressors overwhelm the body’s coping mechanisms – is when signs of stress start to show.

The signs and symptoms of stress are many and varied and include things such as nervous breakdown, inability to sleep well, loss of energy, manifestation of autoimmune disease (or worse) and early ageing – to name a few

As a practicing dentist for the best part of 30 years I saw first hand the effects of this ‘tipping point’. How I’d love to help those people now.

More stories for another day – but in the meantime my 7 tips to deal with stress:

1 Acknowledge that you have a problem – being aware is the first step to making changes.

2 Take a step back and look at what is important to you. Have you become trapped in a lifestyle that no longer brings you joy?

3 Get help. When I was trapped in my business the help I needed wasn’t there – now I have come across so many excellent people who can help you make the changes you need.

4 Accept there are things you can change and those you can’t. Work on the things you can do something about and leave the others. Worrying won’t help.

5 Do yoga. Yoga is a positive step to taking care of you. Aim for the type of yoga that focuses on calming your mind and leaves you feeling blissed out. Contact me if you’d like talk about this.

6 Meditation – can be a follow on from the yoga – meditation and mindfulness are techniques to still the busy mind. There are many ways into meditation – it can be as simple as a walk in the countryside allowing the mind to focus in the sights and sounds – loosing yourself in music, creativity or exercise – or a more structured meditation such as transcendental. Your choice.

7 Nutrigenomics – modern science has identified naturally occurring compounds which have been proven to positively impact the body’s reaction to stress at a cellular level. Ask me for more on this subject.

Nutrigenomics – the moderns science of how food can impact your body at a celluar level

Stress from all sources affects the body at a cellular level resulting in early signs of ageing as well as leaving the body more susceptible to onset of disease. Don’t let your lifestyle destroy your life quality.

#bestversionofyou

#bestversionofyou – do you hashtag this? Do you aspire to be this – or hope to inspire others to be theirs?

When I introduce myself at business meetings I say that I’m a retired dentist, biohacker and yoga teacher – and that I aspire to inspire others to be the best version of themselves. – What do I mean by that?

I hope to inspire not just by my words – but by my actions: by representing a version of me that I can be proud of. Looking at my introduction – how does that explain?

Retired dentist – I left the profession at 52: and no longer am registered. I say this to demonstrate that I am ‘of a certain age’ and have some history of education and business.

Biohacker – because I truly believe that we can influence how our body ages. Paying attention to our diet/input – with particular interest in nutrigenomics ( I work with a company specialising in this field), our lifestyle and our response to stress.

Yoga teacher – because I have discovered that the ancient principles of yoga deliver many of the answers we need in our modern life in terms of mindset, movement, meditation and lifestyle.

I love to see people make choices that bring them life and joy, choices that increase their quality of life and health in the longer term (or healthspan, if you will) – and I love to be part of their journey in making and maintaining those choices.

Trying all the flavours?

As I walked past the ice cream shop on the seafront admiring all the flavours, I considered a challenge: could I sample all the flavours by the end of the season?

Well in fairness, I guess I could – one a week would surely be justified if the ice cream was taken as a mid-walk treat. After all – a 6 plus mile walk must burn quite a few calories…

And it is an award winning ice cream shop – it would be rude not to!

Challenge accepted!

Amaretto Ice cream – a good start!!

It would seem reasonable to review the ice cream – amaretto – full of cherries, reminded me of the one I had in Venice last year. Creamy, flavourful – 10/10..Divine.

You are good enough

It’s a hard one to accept, sometimes – that you are good enough. All those years of conditioning, constantly pushing for more – more exam success, more qualifications, more letters after your name – some sort of validity to your belief that all those years of life experience are worth something.

We live in a world where a piece of paper showing you did the course is somehow worth more than years and years of experience. Is it really though?

It’s time to have more belief in yourself. You are worth it.

You are good enough.

You are good enough – I believe in you

Headstands on Sunday

In an effort towards better crossfit performance a bunch of us turned up at 10am to practise some gymnastic movements.

Crossfit requires you to be an Olympic lifter, runner, rower, gymnast and all round athlete. Tall order indeed! I started the sport nearly 6 years ago and I’m probably the fittest I’ve ever been.

But theres always something new – some tweaks to technique, some variation on the movements.

And to that end, the adventurous spirit of the crossfit athlete takes us to this – headstands on a Sunday morning!

Walking with the Teenager

Oh the pain! – This walk had been planned and discussed all week – he knew we were going out walking today. But at 11:30 he was still in bed and pulling the ‘do I have to?’ routine.

No rush – I can wait. Gentle reminders that there’s no escape followed up and out by 1:30pm.

Not even a long walk – down to the beach and a promise of cookies on the way home – 2 1/2 miles is hardly and ordeal, is it.

made it to the beach!

Despite the drama of getting up and out I’d say yes, it was worth it. There’s nothing quite like walking alongside my son to start a conversation – he loves to chat (at least when he’s not plugged into his Xbox or phone), and a walk is a great opportunity to do just that. More walks on the cards then!

Taking it for granted

It’s all too easy, when you love somewhere beautiful, to take it for granted and rush from place to place totally forgetting to admire the view.

And so it was this afternoon when I had an event I wanted to get o in the town centre: 5 minutes by car or 25 to walk along the beach. I set off in the car – got to the edge of the estate and drove home. The sun was shining and there was no real rush!

Change into walking shoes, warmer jacket plus hat – and took to my feet.

You could, I suppose, argue that the beach will still be there tomorrow: but can you guarantee I (or anyone else) will be? Live now – take nothing for granted .
